Personalised Baby Gifts: What to Check Before You Order

A personalised gift — a name puzzle, an engraved keepsake box, a blanket with the baby's name — is one of the most popular ways to mark a birth, baby shower or first birthday. It is also one of the easiest gifts to get wrong, because personalised items are made to order and are rarely returnable. A few minutes of checking before you order saves a lot of trouble later.

1. Triple-check the spelling and details

Most problems with personalised gifts come down to a typo, a nickname used instead of a legal name, or the wrong birth date. Confirm the exact spelling with the parents if you can, copy names directly from a message rather than retyping them, and check the preview carefully before you pay. Some shops let you approve a digital proof — use it.

2. Work backwards from the date you need it

Made-to-order items have a production time before they ship, and that is added to delivery time. Production can take from a couple of days to a couple of weeks, longer around holidays. Add both together, then allow some buffer — especially for showers and birthdays with a fixed date.

3. Read the return policy before you buy

Because the item has a name on it, many shops do not accept returns on personalised products unless they arrive damaged or with a production error. Check the return and remake policy, how quickly you need to report a problem, and whether photos are required.

4. Check age guidance and small parts

For gifts meant for babies and toddlers, look at the age guidance on the product. Items with small pieces — such as name puzzles with individual letters — are often intended as keepsakes or for older children rather than as toys for children under three. Supervise play, and follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

5. Look at materials and finishes

Wooden gifts are usually finished with paint, stain or oil. Shops often describe their finishes — for example as water-based or non-toxic — so read those descriptions and the care instructions. Textiles should list fibre content and washing instructions; a blanket that cannot go in the washing machine is less practical for new parents.

6. Think about how long it will be used

Some personalised gifts are keepsakes meant to last for years — a memory box or name sign — while others, such as clothing, are outgrown in months. A mix of practical and keepsake is often appreciated, and a short gift note explaining the item helps.

A quick checklist

  • Exact spelling confirmed, preview checked
  • Production + shipping time fits your date
  • Return/remake policy read
  • Age guidance suits the child
  • Materials, finish and care instructions clear
