The Alex Mill Mill Shirt: Fabrics, Colors, Fit, Sizing and Prices from $145 to $225

The Mill Shirt is the button-down that Alex Mill was built on. The brand's story page says Alex Drexler launched the label from a small shop on Elizabeth Street in New York in 2012 with "a mission to make the perfect shirt," and the Mill Shirt is still the center of the men's line. When we checked the store's product feed in October 2026, it listed 20 Mill Shirt colorways across six fabrics, priced from $145 to $225.
This guide goes fabric by fabric: what each version is made of, which colors are listed, the measurements the brand publishes, the care instructions and which version suits which wardrobe. For the wider catalog, shipping and returns, see our full Alex Mill review.
At a glance Checked October 2026
The Mill Shirt is a men's 100% cotton button-down that every listing calls true to size, cut with a relaxed body: the medium measures about 45.75" around the chest and 30" long in most fabrics.
- Best for: Men who want the same relaxed shirt in several weights, from summer poplin to fall corduroy.
- Price range: $145 (cotton poplin) to $225 (Thomas Mason Italian stripe).
- Sizes: XS to XXL; the Thomas Mason stripe stops at XL.
- Care: Machine washable; the poplin listing says line dry.
- Watch out for: Only medium measurements are published, and US refunds cost $9 within a 21-day window.
The fabrics and colors listed
Every Mill Shirt in the feed is 100% cotton. The versions differ in weave, weight and pattern, and the price climbs with the fabric:
- Cotton Poplin, $145. The original and the widest color choice: Dark Navy, White, Calm Blue, Cardinal, Provence Blue, Wheatfield and Rhubarb. Poplin is smooth, light and crisp, which makes it the obvious pick for warm weather or for wearing under a sweater. Wheatfield showed as sold out in every size when we checked.
- Oxford, $155. White and Blue. The listing says this version gets "a special wash to make it feel even softer and lived-in" and has a classic button-down collar with a relaxed fit "that you can wear tucked in or not."
- Washed Chambray, $155. One color, Chambray Rinse Wash. Chambray is a light, denim-look weave that reads more casual than poplin.
- Stripe Portuguese Poplin, $165. Navy/White and Blue/White. The brand describes it as "super easy and lightweight" in "crisp Portuguese cotton fabric" that looks "all the better rumpled and worn."
- Fine Wale Corduroy, $175. Butter, Navy and Chicory Coffee. Fine-wale cord has narrow ribs and is the cold-weather option of the group.
- Thomas Mason x Alex Mill Striped Mill Shirt, $225. Five stripes on white: French Blue, Pine Grove, Purple, Chocolate and Burgundy. The fabric is made in Italy by Thomas Mason, which the listing describes as "making Europe's finest shirts since 1796."

Fit, sizing and measurements
Alex Mill labels Mill Shirt sizes XS, SM, M, LG, XL and XXL. Every listing says the shirt fits true to size, but the cut is relaxed rather than slim. The brand publishes measurements for the medium only, shown on a 6'1" model:
- Cotton poplin, washed chambray and corduroy: 45.75" around the chest, 30" long, and a 35.5" sleeve measured from the neck.
- Oxford: the same 45.75" chest, 30" length and 35.5" sleeve, plus a 19.5" shoulder.
- Stripe Portuguese Poplin: 45.5" chest, 19" across the shoulders and 30" long.
- Thomas Mason stripe: 45.75" chest, 19.5" shoulder, 30" long and a 34.75" sleeve. The listing does not say whether that sleeve is measured from the neck or the shoulder.
Because only one size is measured, the practical way to choose is to compare with a shirt you already like. Button it, lay it flat, measure straight across the chest from armpit seam to armpit seam and double the number. If your shirt is close to 45.75" and fits the way you want, the medium is your reference point. If it is several inches smaller and you prefer a trimmer look, the size down may suit you better, but sizing down also shortens the sleeve and body, not just the chest.
Length matters too. At 30" on a medium, the shirt is long enough for most people to tuck in, and the Oxford listing says it works either way. Tall sizes are not listed. The brand's standalone size-guide page returned a "not found" message when we checked, so the product pages are the only source of numbers.
Construction and care
The listings point to a handful of construction details that separate the Mill Shirt from a basic cotton button-down:
- Flat-felled, clean-finished seams (listed on the poplin, chambray and corduroy versions)
- The brand's signature "X" embroidery or stitch
- Real troca shell buttons on the poplin version and "real shell buttons" on the Oxford
Care instructions vary by listing. The poplin version says to machine wash with non-toxic detergent, skip bleach and line dry. The Thomas Mason stripe says machine wash cold, then line dry or tumble dry low. The Oxford and Portuguese poplin listings give the fiber content but no care line, so follow the label inside the shirt. With any 100% cotton shirt, a cold wash and line drying is the cautious route if you want to keep the length and sleeve you bought.

Prices, shipping and returns on a Mill Shirt order
Mill Shirt prices were the same across every size and color within each fabric, and we found no marked-down Mill Shirts in the feed when we checked. A few points affect what a shirt order actually costs:
- Free shipping threshold: the shipping page offers free US standard ground shipping on orders of $200 and up, excluding Puerto Rico and US territories. A single $145 poplin shirt falls short; two poplin shirts ($290), or one corduroy shirt and a $68 Standard T-Shirt ($243), clear it. The rate below $200 is not published.
- Dispatch: orders typically ship in 1 to 2 business days.
- Returns: full-price items can be returned unworn, with tags and in original packaging, within 21 days of delivery for a $9 fee. The separate refund-policy page says 21 days "of purchase," so start early.
- Exchanges: the $9 fee is waived, which makes swapping a size the cheaper route if a shirt does not fit. Exchanges and returns are also accepted at the 77 Mercer Street and 1182 Madison Avenue stores.
- Final sale: sale items and all international orders cannot be returned.
Alex Mill did not show a public code for shirts when we checked, and we do not list codes we cannot verify. Any working offers we find are listed on our Alex Mill coupons page.
Who the Mill Shirt suits
- A first Mill Shirt: cotton poplin in White, Calm Blue or Dark Navy is the most versatile choice and the cheapest at $145.
- A softer, weekend shirt: the washed Oxford or the washed chambray, both $155.
- Fall and winter: fine-wale corduroy at $175, which works as a light overshirt.
- Stripes: the Portuguese poplin at $165, or the Thomas Mason version at $225 if Italian fabric matters to you.
It is a weaker fit for anyone who wants a slim, close-cut shirt, needs tall sizing or is buying from outside the US, where orders are final sale. Women shopping the brand will find the Jo and Gracie shirts in the women's section instead.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the Alex Mill Mill Shirt cost?
$145 in cotton poplin, $155 in Oxford or washed chambray, $165 in striped Portuguese poplin, $175 in fine-wale corduroy and $225 in Thomas Mason striped Italian cotton, based on the product feed in October 2026.
Does the Mill Shirt run big?
The listings call it true to size, but it is cut with room: the medium measures about 45.75" around the chest and 30" long. Compare those numbers with a shirt you own before choosing a size.
Can the Mill Shirt go in the washing machine?
Yes. The poplin listing says machine wash with non-toxic detergent, no bleach, and line dry; the Thomas Mason listing allows a low tumble dry. Some listings give no care line, so check the label.
The bottom line
The Mill Shirt is a relaxed, well-finished cotton button-down sold in six fabrics from $145 to $225, with the same basic cut across most versions. Start with poplin if you want one shirt, measure a shirt you own against the 45.75" medium chest, and use a free exchange rather than a $9 refund if the size is off.
