Black Friday and Holiday Shopping 2026: A Checklist Before You Buy Online (Return Windows, Final Sale, Shipping Cutoffs, Duties)

Black Friday and the weeks after it are when most people buy holiday gifts online, and also when a lot of them get caught by the fine print: a return window that closed before Christmas, a sale item that turned out to be final sale, a parcel that arrived after the holiday, or a courier asking for import charges at the door. None of this is hidden; it is usually on a store's shipping and returns pages. This checklist walks through the six things worth checking before you pay, with real examples from stores we have reviewed.
At a glance Checked October 2026
Before you check out, confirm when the return clock starts, what is final sale, what a return costs, what condition the item must be in, how long processing and shipping take, and who pays duties on international orders.
- Best for: Anyone buying holiday gifts online between Black Friday and late December.
- Time needed: A few minutes per store, on the shipping and returns pages.
- Watch out for: Return windows that start on the order date, sale items marked final sale, and duties-unpaid shipping from overseas stores.
How we chose: the examples below come from our own store reviews, which link to the full policies. Policies are as checked in October 2026; stores change them, especially around the holidays, so re-read the current page before you buy.
1. Find out when the return clock starts
"30 days" means very different things depending on when the count begins. Look for the exact wording:
- From the order date. Cords Club accepts returns "within 30 days of placing your order," so earrings bought in early November can be outside the window by the holidays, as our Cords Club gift guide points out. Bala counts 30 days from the date of purchase for a refund.
- From delivery. ASTR the Label, APL, Camp Snap and Credo Beauty count from delivery or receipt, which gives you a little more time.
- A holiday extension. Barefoot Dreams lets items bought November 1 to December 25 be returned until January 31, the clearest holiday rule we found. See our Barefoot Dreams review.
- Conflicting pages. Alex Mill's returns page says 21 days from delivery while its refund-policy page says 21 days of purchase. When pages disagree, plan around the shorter reading.
Also note the length. APL allows refunds only within 10 days of delivery (our APL review has the details), while CPX Pickleball allows 90 days from receipt.
2. Check whether sale items are final sale
A Black Friday markdown can quietly remove your right to return. Examples from our reviews:
- Credo Beauty: marked-down items, gifts with purchase and gift cards are final sale, per our Credo gift sets guide.
- Alex Mill: sale items, monogrammed and hand-painted totes, and all international orders are final sale (see our Alex Mill review).
- 111SKIN: sale products get 14 days instead of 28.
- Personalized items: embroidered Barefoot Dreams pieces are final sale.
- Category exclusions: Bala lists Beams, all mats, Kettleballs and Power Rings as final sale, and CPX Pickleball lists demo paddles as final sale.
If you are buying for someone else and are not certain about size or color, a full-price item with a clear return policy can be the safer choice than a final-sale markdown.
3. Know what a return will cost you
"Free returns" banners do not always mean a free refund. Fees we found:
- ASTR the Label: $5 on all returns, and a refund only within 14 days of delivery; days 15 to 30 get store credit. Our ASTR review explains the tiers.
- AGOLDE: $10 on US refunds to your card, while store credit and same-style size exchanges are free, per our AGOLDE review.
- Alex Mill: $9 per refund, waived for exchanges.
- APL: a $10 handling fee on mail-in returns, even though banners advertise free returns.
- Cords Club: a 4% processing fee on refunds.
- Bala: a $5 restocking fee plus the return label cost.
- CPX Pickleball: no restocking fee listed, but you pay return shipping.
If you plan to order two sizes and send one back, add the fee to the price you are comparing.
4. Check the condition rules: sealed, unworn or unused
Many gifts can only go back untouched. Bellami accepts clip-in extensions within 90 days of delivery, but only if the set is unopened with the security seal and tester piece intact; our Bellami Hair review suggests ordering a $15 ColorMatch sample set first. 111SKIN and AVANT Skincare take back only unopened products. APL needs shoes unworn and in an undamaged shoebox, and Camp Snap needs cameras unused. Tell the recipient to keep the packaging until they are sure.
5. Work backward from processing and shipping times
Shipping estimates often start after an order is processed, not when you click buy. Barefoot Dreams lists up to 7 to 10 business days of processing before ground shipping of 3 to 5 business days, and embroidered items add another 7 to 10 business days. Alex Mill's hand-painted monograms ship in about three weeks. Bala lists 3 to 10 business days in the US with no expedited option. Camp Snap ships an order containing a pre-order item only when everything is in stock, so its gift guide suggests ordering pre-orders separately.
Most of these stores do not publish a Christmas cutoff, so give yourself margin. While you are on the shipping page, note the free-shipping threshold: $30 at CPX Pickleball, $75 at ASTR, $95 at APL, $150 at Barefoot Dreams, $200 at Alex Mill and $275 at Bellami, while Bala charges shipping on every standard order.
6. Ordering from the UK or abroad: check who pays duties
Overseas stores handle import charges differently. 111SKIN's US store ships on a delivered duty unpaid basis, so the courier can ask for taxes and duties before releasing the parcel, and if you ship a gift directly, the recipient may be the one contacted; see our 111SKIN review. AVANT Skincare's shipping policy says it covers import duties and taxes upfront, as our AVANT Skincare review explains, though returns to the UK are at your own cost. Look for the words "duties," "taxes" or "DDP/DDU" on the delivery page, and check the order total at checkout.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to buy gifts on Black Friday or closer to the holidays?
Buying early protects delivery, but at stores where the return window starts on the order date or runs only 10 to 14 days, an early purchase can leave little time to return the gift. Check the return wording before deciding.
Do gift cards solve the return problem?
Mostly, since they avoid size and color guesses, but they are usually non-returnable themselves. Credo, CPX Pickleball and Camp Snap all list gift cards as final sale or non-returnable.
What should I screenshot before I check out?
The return policy, the shipping estimate and any final-sale label on the product page, with the date. If a policy changes later, you have a record of the terms you bought under.
The checklist in one place
Before you pay: when does the return clock start, is the item final sale, what will a return cost, must it stay sealed or unworn, how long will processing plus shipping take, and who pays duties? Five minutes on the policy pages can save a gift that arrives late or cannot go back.
